From my 2XJ experiences, I haven’t found any particular era of 2XJ tubas to play better than the other if they are in good playing condition. I have previously owned a 1940’s era 20J and a 1950’s era 24J. Both the 25J and the 20J play very well for what they are.

Technically this factory move happened in 1969 but your 1968 horn might be cutting close around that timeline so I’d really ask your teacher about the serial number and the history of the horn. The tricky part is that some of these horns have inconsistent serial numbers so they don’t have letters at the beginning.
